In honour of Spectre, which came out in cinemas this weekend, I wanted to honour one of my favourite characters in film history, James Bond. The movie, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service happens to be one of the most overlooked and underrated in all the 24 James Bond films. While On Her Majesty’s Secret Service irritated many Bond fans when it was released in 1969, it also happens to be one of my favourite Bond films ever made and one more people should see.

Why People Don’t Like On Her Majesty’s Secret Service…

Let’s face it George Lazenby had some enormous shoes to fill when he replaced Sean Connery, the original, and many would say the best actor to play James Bond. This wouldn’t have been an easy task for any actor, little own someone who wasn’t even an actor to begin with. Lazenby in fact lied on his resume during the audition and stated that he had acted in several films in Eastern blocked countries when he had never actually acted before. Although he isn’t considered the best Bond, Lazenby was definitely not a horrible actor nor a horrible Bond.

Many people I know scoff at On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and dismiss watching it because they hear it isn’t a good film. Many Bond fans I know haven’t seen this film because of the negative things they’ve heard about it. Well, let me first start off by telling everyone reading this that if you’re a Bond fan and have never seen this film before, On Her majesty’s Secret Service may surprise you. It’s a travesty that this film got no love and that many people haven’t seen it simply because of rumours. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is not only a really good film but it’s very dramatic and has a great Bond villain in Telly Savalas. George Lazenby’s performance as Bond is also highly underrated and very well restrained for a non-actor.

To clear up another rumour, many believed that Lazenby was stopped or prevented from playing Bond again and many think that it’s because he didn’t do a good job in this one but that’s very much untrue. Lazenby only wanted to play Bond once and made that decision after filming On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. He was in fact asked to play Bond again by the producers and declined. That next film would bring back Sean Connery and would be called Diamonds Are Forever.

Why On Her Majesty’s Secret Service Is A Terrific Bond Movie…

In this rendition, Bond deals once again with the secret, criminal origination known as SPECTRE. Not only does the newest film in the Bond series deal with this same organization but so did the very first Bond film, which is one of my personal favourites, Dr. No. This time around veteran actor Telly Savalas played the role of criminal mastermind behind SPECTRE, named Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Previously, the role had been played by Donald Pleasence in You Only Live Twice and Telly does a terrific job as the terrifying and menacing villain.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is a story that includes brainwashing, allergy research, bacteriological warfare and is also the film where James Bond’s bride is murdered. That’s right, the biggest womanizer in the world settled down with a beautiful bride and she was killed just moments after she was wed to James Bond. If for nothing else, watch this film for that dreadfully, powerful scene. It’s well shot and moving to see such a different side of Bond that we hadn’t seen before nor have we seen that side of Bond again.

In the end, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is a VERY GOOD FILM and I would argue that it should be placed in the top 10 BEST BOND FILMS of all time. This is a franchise that has given us some really amazing movies and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is up there despite being COMPLETELY UNDERRATED and sadly OVERLOOKED.
